TENDUA - Association for biodiversity conservation

Newsletter N°12 - November 2014

Dear Members and Friends, 15/11/2014

As these wonderful body cells whose main feature is undoubtedly the intelligence on which even the quantum physics does not have access, the planet has its own reasons, that human reason does not understand. We do not yet know the intimacy of the cell; yet we question its cycles and what generates its evolution. Similarly, we are always surprised by the life of our planet and its own rhythms (“Eyh, the Earth is not for the exclusive service of humanity???”). These rhythms do not match those of men, and to our scale, they are real disasters.
One of thèse forthcoming disasters, on which we have decided to focus this time is the reversal of poles and one of its conséquences: the phasing out of the geomagnetic field.
Pending this réversal, our planet is alive : in Japan, a new island is growing and in Tunisia, a strange lake has appeared. But, unfortunately, the Aral Sea has almost disappeared in 50 years, and we do not pay enough attention to all this life : oceans are emptied of fish.

On the consomption side, marketing invented a label for organic palm oil without regard to forests and ecosystems destroyed.
Let’s put together our clock on time : note when the Homo sapiens arrived, and all he has (un)done since ...
Finally, our Agenda - TENDUA is joining the CAP LOUP collective ; and our pink book, a baby Yellow boxfish....

Happy reading!

LIVING PLANET : towards a reversal of geomagnatic poles ?

Source : AFP
Our good planet Earth generates deep in its bowels a magnetic field. This magnetic field acts as a invisible shield without which life would probably never have appeared on Earth. Her “neighbor” Mars had also once its own magnetic field, but it disappeared for unknown reasons. Left to the mercy of the winds of space, Mars is inhospitable to us, and apparently lifeless. Now it seems that the magnetic field of the Earth is also losing its power, and at very high speed.

*** What is the Earth’s magnetic field ?

The Earth’s magnetic field is due to displacement of matter in the outer core. It seems that this core is composed of iron and nickel, more or less liquid, that are in a vibrant permanent rotary motion around a solid inner core. The energy of this rotary motion is converted into electromagnetic energy: this is the principle of a gigantic dynamo.
This magnetic field deflects the solar wind from reaching our planet. These solar winds are streams of ionizing particles or cosmic rays; some are very dangerous because of their radioactivity.
So this magnetic field is very useful, one can even say that it was essential to the emergence of life on Earth.

*** Why these reversals of the poles ?

This magnetic field is alive: it varies, it fluctuates and it reverses. The inversion phenomenons are likely related to decelaration in movements of the Earth’s core, or to changes in their direction.

Geophysicists have shown, thanks to coring in the mountains, that our planet has experienced several episodes of magnetic pole reversal. Through the study of volcanic rocks, scientists can trace the history of magnetic field (paleomagnetism). Indeed, the crystals are oriented according lava field in place, and as it cools, they keep track of their alignment.

In 2001, it was discovered during an international polar expedition, that in seven years the magnetic North Pole of the Earth had moved about 300 km. Movement speed of the Canadian Arctic Shelf towards Russia, specifically towards «Severnaya Zemlya», is now 40 km per year. According to forecasts of scientists, the North could end at any given moment, in the South Atlantic. Evidenced by the significant anomaly observed in this region, where the magnetic field is only 60% of the standard.

In late June 2014, the European Space Agency (ESA) presented the first results of its Swarm mission, a constellation of three small satellites launched in November 2013, which examines in detail the Earth’s magnetic field. The measurements made by satellites showed that said magnetic field was beginning to weaken rapidly, losing 5% of its intensity in a decade, down ten times faster than was previously envisaged.
This has revived the theory that this weakness could be the prelude to a reversal of the poles.

Thus, geologists have estimated that the most recent geomagnetic reversal occurred about 780,000 years ago. Currently, no one can say whether the trend observed decline will continue. But the magnetic field has already been lower in the past, before bouncing back and returning to normal levels.

*** What will happen when the magnetic field will disappear ?

In March 1989 in Quebec, a major solar eruption - from which some particles may have crept into the defects of our earthly shield - caused a geomagnetic storm causing a collapse of the power grid and a power failure of large magnitude. Our civilization is based on electricity. It is hard to imagine what will happen across the world when the magnetosphere will weaken, as it occurs during a magnetic pole reversal ...

The problem of complete reversal is that we do not know when it will happen, how long it will take and what are going to be all the consequences of this reversal.
However, we know that during this period of time, the Earth will no longer be protected by its magnetic shield. The ozone layer, already damaged by our activities, will be disrupted, which will create huge holes in the atmosphere at some places in the world. These unstable “holes” will move from one place to another.

The magnetic field of the Earth will diminish and disappear during the field’s reversal, perhaps for several days, weeks or years, before recovering then, but reversed.

The absence of magnetic field during the process of imbalance, is going to let all the space particles and cosmic radiation (notably from the Photon Belt) watering the Earth. As a matter of fact, during this period, the Earth will no longer benefit from its own magnetic belt to protect us. These belts are called Van Allen’s Belts, named after the scientist who discovered them in 1958; they are one of the filtering mechanisms, with the atmosphere, of the particles that arrive from the sun and space.

The beginnings of reversal according to some scientists, are already in place: the climate change (accelerated by human activities), natural disasters such as tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes and other upset seasons ...
The WHO (World Health Organization) is already preparing to cancer deaths of millions people, or more, if solar radiation is not stopped ....

«The weakening of the magnetic field during the transition phase will reduce the effectiveness of this protective shield, leaving the field open to the solar wind particles and to harmful radiations, whose virulence is sure to have a serious impact on human health and on all kinds of terrestrial ecosystems.
Magnetic storms (due to solar wind) and aurora borealis could then be part of our daily lives ; a series of earthquakes along the tectonic fault lines and some gigantic tsunamis, consecutive to suboceanic changes, may also occur causing the disappearance under the waves of islands and coastal regions, while the seabed arise from depths ...»

JAPAN : a new island emerged from the ocean

This island is the result of a volcanic eruption on November 20, 2013. Located about 1000 km south of Tokyo, the volcanic island emerged near the uninhabited island of Nishinoshima. It is composed mainly of hardened lava and originally measured 400 meters long and 200 meters wide.

The island grows as its craters still spit lava. The craters of the island spew daily about 200 000 m3 of lava. To give an idea of how much it is, it could fill 80 Olympic swimming pools each day with all that lava. According to the Japan Coast Guard, its size has increased : in July 2014, its size was 1550 m on 1,350 meters, and it could continue to expand. The Nishinoshima island is now joined by the new island. This set now covers 1.26 km2 of territory and does not seem to stop from spreading.

TUNISIA : the emergence of a new lak

In southern Tunisia, 25km from Gafsa, a town of 85,000 inhabitants, a lake with an area of more than 1 hectare and a depth of 20m, appeared on the site Effath, a former desert canyon already been renamed “Gafsa Beach”.

The origin of the formation of this lake remains to be determined. One hypothesis advanced that minor seismic tremors could fracture the rock to an aquifer. Under pressure, the million of m3 of water that makes up the lake would be brought to the surface. A first hypothesis proposed by a geologist of the Faculty of Sciences of Gafsa who finally challenged this possibility.

According to the Regional Commission for Agricultural Development Gafsa, it would be just a basin in which has accumulated rainwater.
A final hypothesis argues that three sources of fresh water would have emerged and converged on the site.

The mysterious lake became the prime attraction in the area. But swimming here has two major risks. First, the basin in which the lake was formed is a former phosphate operating site, of which the soils of the region are exceptionally rich. However, this phosphate is likely to have contaminated the water, thus rendering it radioactive and carcinogenic.
The journalist Lakhdhar Souid, living in the region and who follows the evolution of the phenomenon since its appearance, said that «the first few days, the water was crystal clear, turquoise blue. Today, it is green and filled with algae. That means that the water is not oxygenated and is conducive to disease.»

Furthermore, if the hypothesis of the underground origin proves to be correct, it is likely that the lake still communicates with the water from which it came. If that was the case, siphons can then train and suck the unwary swimmers to the bottom. Besides diving competitions - a never risk-free activity - that engage the dozens of young. And, especially since no monitoring system has been put in place. «There is no security: no lifeguard and civil protection came only the first day», still regrets Lakhdhar Souid.

ARAL SEA : a phasing out in 50 years

Source : l’Express, oct. 2014

The NASA has published a series of photographs illustrating the shrinking of the Aral Sea, straddling Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The NASA could also published series on what happens in Alaska, Colorado ... but that would be another article ...

In the 1960s, the Aral Sea, further fueled by the mighty rivers Amu Darya and Syr Darya, was formerly one of the four largest lakes in the world with an area of 66,458 km2 (approx.26,000 sq mi). In 2000, the area was divided by two. This drying due to the diversion of two rivers to produce cotton by weight, is one of the largest natural disasters of the twentieth century.

In August 2005, the construction of the dike Kokaral between the small northern part of the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan and the rest of the depression, was completed. The small northern part was called then the small Aral sea and thus is preserved of the drying up. Since then, the southern part, originally called the Large Aral sea, receives virtually no surface water and is largely dry.

These derivations have helped irrigate hitherto desert areas but dried up sources of income for fishermen. The dust from the lake, mixed with chemicals related to agriculture becomes even dangerous.

Don’t worry : everything is going well for our wardrobes. We are still able to buy more jeans’ and other cotton items than we can wear ... at which ecological price ??

WORLD : less and les fish in our oceans..

Source : interview of Reporterre, oct.2014

During the summer of 2014, a scientific study on the impact of fishing on marine resources has painted an alarming fact: fish stocks fail to recover. The oceans are emptying, inexorably.
The news has gone unnoticed in the hubbub of the news, but, Tuesday, October 14, the European Fisheries Council did met to adopt measures to reduce catches of cod and salmon. But much less than would be necessary for the sustainable maintenance of fish stocks. Didier Gascuel, a scientist specializing in fisheries, participated in this important study.
«Until the late 1990s, quotas were somewhat restrictive. Suddenly, the fish became scarce in European waters. For over thirty years, overfishing has destroyed deep marine ecosystems. And since 1970, catches were divided by two!», he said.
Faced with this crisis, stronger measures were taken, including more restrictive quotas, which were closer to scientific advices. These measures have proved relatively effective. In twelve years, fishing pressure has been halved. Some stocks, such as the North Sea plaice and the hake, have recovered. This is an unexpected result. But beware : the quota policy has not solved everything, far from it.

The expected results are not met. Overall the resources did not increase as expected. And biodiversity did not improve, or just a little. Especially, young fish are fewer and fewer. This is quite worrying, and that is the surprise of this study.

If there are fewer young fish, it may mean that there are fewer births but also the larvae from the reproduction do not survive in the absence of a sufficiently rich and stable ecosystem. And overfishing is not the sole culprit.
Coastal habitats have been severely degraded; and, they are important breeding areas. In addition, global warming is changing the composition of the plankton that feed the larvae. In short, it is quite possible that the stocks do not rise up again.
The crisis is not behind us. Large predatory fish are still in danger, and they are the ones that ensure the stability of ecosystems. And overfishing was so important that it may take years before the marine environment recovers.
We must continue the policy of quotas, no doubt. But it is not enough. We should also develop protected areas where fishing is completely prohibited in areas of reproduction, for example.
We are also looking to highlight techniques and most virtuous fishing methods. Take into account the differences between fleets. A flotilla is a group of fishing boats in the same fishing class in the same area, as the Breton trawlers. And some fleets are more virtuous than others.
We could introduce a bonus-malus system, or modulate the quotas. But the fishermen are very reluctant, and the regulation is not in fashion right now in Brussels. "

Organic Palm Oil has no ecological reality, it’s just a matter of marketing

Extracted from the fruit, the palm oil is today the most popular vegetable oil in the world.
It represents approximately 65% of vegetable oils used. It is estimated that in a supermarket, nearly half of the products for sale contain palm oil. And with world population growth, the volumes could double by 2020 ...

Most of the everyday consumer goods contain palm oil. However, labels are not always clear and palm oil may appear in the composition of the products under different names and derivatives, such as :

Non-exhaustive list of products that contain palm oil:

Manufacturers have now invented a new reference for their product: “Contains certified sustainable palm oil” and they were able to adjoin to their business the support of the WWF.

2015 is already claimed to be the “key year” in the battle for sustainable palm oil, the year from which many companies are committed to use 100% sustainable palm oil in their products. Thus, Unilever had planned for several years to put pressure on its suppliers asking them to become “sustainable”. What does a multibillion enterprise do when a label does not exist but when consumers do not want product with palm oil ? We invent new labels that we finance, we create websites and blogs, that gives it the varnish “sustainable development” and environmentalist necessary ...
Do not be bamboozled by speeches or labels !! > All of this is just marketing, far away from the respect for the environment !!!

PLANET : to put the clock straight

With all the information floating around, published as soon as abandoned for proceeding to the next, a little humility and discernment would not hurt us ...
Most of us remain convinced that humans (Homo sapiens) is at the top of the evolutionary tree ... This is a classic representation, though somewhat obsolete. To place us so high, harder will be the fall!

Originally, our intelligence was at the service of improving our daily lives, along a development axis oriented essentially to the mechanical progress. Today, the marketing campaigns sell us the material and physical improvement of “our” life, the aim now is the financial gain. Thus, we produce, we consume more and more and our “progressive” intelligence is now in the service of money and power, i.e. to pump ever more natural resources of the planet, ignoring the danger that it represent for all mankind (including those who are not able to consume).

The Earth
The Earth’s clock.

Homo sapiens who arrived within the last 30 seconds of the age of our planet, has reached to upset the balance of our Mother Earth, putting his own species in danger.
Yet the intelligence that characterizes our species is also the means to stop the ongoing ecological disaster. The consequences of these disasters - most of which are caused by our human activities for the greed - are predicted by the international scientific community since longtime .... But nothing happens!

We play, passively or not, the sorcerer’s apprentice, believing master nature, defying its rules, which 99% still escape us ...
If the end of our species is written, why are we in such a hurry to finish ?? In suffering and destroying everything we can before, on behalf of what exactly ??

Some adopt a philosophical attitude by declaring that in any case, nature is dying, with us, but nature will regenerate ... so ??? Is this a reason to let do??
The reversal of poles, the climate changes, the loss of species, ... all that is part of the evolution: life is movement, whether we like it or not.
but WE, humans, are responsible for the rapid destruction of species, the holes in the ozone layer to allow our plants to operate on behalf of our «material comfort»...

Didn’t we choose a wrong target : money instead of life?
Can’t we reconsider what we are doing globally, recognize our mistakes and not continue on these dangerous routes for all for the benefit of a few? Who has that power? Those who keep us in the illusion of full consumption, the full employment and personal enrichment or us, all the others? And if we, each of us decides to keep its own power, if each of us simply decide just to live and live right, in the respect of our environment that, for thousands of years, strives to give us everything we need: freshwater, clean air, food ... ?
